Alacrity rooftop escape by mrpranny Alacrity rooftop escape by mrpranny
:iconalacda: `s alacrity character fleeing from the scene across rooftops. This took soo long to get all the animated bits in the right frames and to line up all the clothes and body parts ....i could go on : ) . Pretty happy with the colours and the eyes came out how i would have liked-- if you look close they are the only true colour part. the rest is filtered with a few layers to give the night time moonlit vibe.
I may try to add in a few extra bits like shurikens being thrown at Alacrity . I wasnt sure how to though but I`m toying with having them come from within the trees . since they are disk shaped and flat its hard for them to show up. Perhaps if they are shiny and catch the moonlight and perhaps if they leave a slight blur trail it could work. Then again it may just spoil the image !

EDIT 11/11/11 : Lessened the file size so that its better to view online! Added a little spring to the run and added a little breast bouyancy. And note to self - add some more hair bobbing behind!

I think it's a great loop and you've obviously done loads of work on it, all I would say is, seeing as she is wearing such a non supportive bra, I would assume her chest would bounce more as she runs. unless she has silicon implants :B

some boob dynamics:

That's very interesting how you manage to loop the rooftops and the trees from a front view. It looks like you have a 3D element going on with the roof especially (the trees I'm assuming you have them shrink at a certain rate and then disappear at a point). As for the running motion itself, the painting/rendering is very nice, with impressive details on the musculature. Her legs and feet also look really nicely drawn even at the awkward/difficult angles. It looks like you have a good grasp on anatomy. I do have some suggestions for the running motion itself.

I assume part of it has to do with trying to keep as much of the original drawing as possible to keep from having to redraw frames (which with this level of painting/rendering quality, I wouldn't blame you.) but her shoulders and hips are much too stiff throughout the run. Her shoulders and hips should move towards/away from the camera. When she brings her arm forward, not only should her shoulder follow, but some of her upper torso should twist as well. The same goes for her hips. They should be rotating closer/farther from the viewer as she runs. Also, her breasts should have some secondary motion/bounce. I don't mean bouncing everywhere as if they're made of rubber as you would see on some video games or cartoons, but she has very little support covering her boobs so they should be reacting to the motion of her run. Additionally, her body should bob up and down even if only a little bit - it is too even. Record someone running and watch how they lift off the ground briefly between each step. Right now it looks more like she's jogging. With just a few changes in her posture, it could look more like she's running for her life.

Finally, her jump is too stiff and doesn't have anticipation. She just raises up without any hint of preparation. At least have her bend forward a bit and bend her knees right before the jump. Or, when I jump while running, I tend to do a small jump for momentum, then crouch down and do a longer jump (though different people may jump differently. Maybe look up Parkour as a reference? They do a lot of running and jumping). When she lands, she should still have momentum pushing her forward. Right now she lands perfectly still, on both feet and with her body stiff and upright. She should either tuck and roll, or stumble forward, or land partially crouched then keep running.

Overall, it's a really nice drawing and well rendered animation. You have the overall poses well thought out, and good job looping a run/background animation like this from a front view. If you could just push the poses a little bit more and show more momentum, you can really make an animation like this shine! I like some of the subtle motions you have there, like the hair and mouth, and overall color scheme with the moon and stars is very nice! Good job!

That must be the longest comment I`ve ever had! Thanks for taking the time! Yeah the torso twist sounds right but on the reference I used the runner did not employ this but kept fairly straight on. I`ll definitely add some boobmotion . I will play with having her move up and down a little more but I honestly cant see it working without more frames. The jump I agree ought to have some anticipation but again it was to do with making this animation fairly short. I played with raising her arms just before take off but it didnt leave enough time with the original loop I felt. The stiff landing is a tough one. I saw it as being like this originally --like a gymnast lands dead on the spot and a small steady crouch. For anything else I would need to use diofferent speed animations and that was going to be tough with all the background bits going on and the fact the animation is already fairly fast , leaving no room for even faster movements.More Momentum is a good description/breakdown yeah! Glad you noticed the stars :) . I`ll definitely try this again some time and I`ll concentrate just on the running. Its good to have all these useful comments to come back to! Even if I sound like I have considered many of these elements already I will have likely forgotten by then!Thankyou!

Oh you mean on her feet? Yeah that`s likely to give some bad toe calluses. Honestly would you go up to a jogger in the street and say that ? Or would you just bash them with your bible/quaran/daily mail (same thing) first ;p .

No, I meant that there's a lot of skin showing. What I mean is that there are a lot of younger people, and they aren't exactly old enough for that kind of "coverage."

Dont worry I know what you mean I was being deliberately obtuse and I am very very sorry, but I happen to disagree.
The character is not enacting any sort of sexual activity .
You see more on a beach. Have you been to a beach? :)

And not at the beaches where I live. We got COLD water. Lake Michigan. One pieces there.

Why isn't her head and torso moving while she's running? A lot of people make that mistake.

Her torso is moving though and her hips are moving as much as possible. The problem I had ( and it wasnt a mistake ;p ) was that I was using a certain number of frames that meant I couldnt move the character up and down without it looking wrong and there being too much movement too quickly .It would have resulted in you not being able to see her facial movements clearly . It was a choice I made which I could have overcome by using tweening but I decided against it because of the awful results it gives (in my opinion ) .And again it would have bee detrimental to the details elsewhere. It would have been fine if I had got about 20 frames for the entire running one leg to the other process instead of about 6 but that would have meant the file size would have increasewd exponentially too , resulting in a much lower resolution animation . Good question though.

Pyro, I saw this and was going to say the EXACT same thing! I went to reply and you beat me to the punch by about 8 minutes! Yeah, in a run hips, body, and head do go up and down in the movement. it's impossible for it to be stiff like this. There are a lot of run cycle tutorials on the web and even a few that cover this perspective that you got going.

Haha! A lot! It gets tiring though, that's why I always skip the 'blinking animations', emoticons and anything related to anime. If I were to criticize all of them, it would become a part time job.

You too? Yeah, I never watch the anime stuff cause I don't like it and there's too much of it. Emoticons are emoticons so yeah, I hear ya. I love the things that say they're animated, you watch and it's an eyeblink or the background might "sway" a little. Speaking of which, who's the guy that keeps putting up the pictures of locations with the weird fx on them and the fractal stuff? I wish he'd stop.
